- "very old, but not out of place. The artist, finally, is at the same time equally prejudiced as Nature: he must not have hesitations, repentings, and be omnipotent like her. / In _Mafarka_ the force of creation is truly extraordinary. That world—men and landscape—gigantically barbaric affirms itself there as reality, unfolds without reticences, without those foolish shames that become, if one looks closely, hypocritical and cowardly shamelessnesses. (_Thunderous applause_). / For this reason it seems to me, that the fundamental episode of the _Rape of the Black Women_ is in its place which has excited above all the magistrate conscience of the Procurator of the King, preventing him from seeing that the artist had need of the basis of that loathsome substratum to show his violent indignation against the baseness of the instincts. He was shocked by the necessary brutality of the representation, by the crudeness of the precise vocabulary; he attributed a deplorable complacency of vice to the prodigious evidence of that nefandous orgy and paid no more attention to the rest: he did not think that the spirit of the author speaks, precisely there, through the mouth of Mafarka el Bar, when he makes him burst forth in the midst of all that human rottenness, with the scimitar—I cite the very words of the Poet—flashing and curved over his head like an aureole."

- "'The irritated and forked geometry of that royal tent cut jagged the incandescent blue of the sky, and the brown draperies, overloaded with greenish glass beads and swollen by the desert wind, resembled, at certain moments, old hulls covered in algae and mosses. On the threshold stood a colossal Negro, completely naked, from his massive head to his broad feet. His thick hair made float gracefully a whole multicolored garden of ostrich and peacock feathers, and he had, in his gaze and in his attitudes, an air of uninvolved elegance, at once aristocratic and gypsy-like, which seduced immediately. In the lobes of his ears were inserted two disks of fragrant wood. This was Brafane-el-Kibir, the supreme chief, who personally supervised the work of about twenty soldiers seated on the ground intent on smearing the irons of the lances with yellow poisons.'"
