Doctor Thorne

And thus after all did Frank perform his great duty; he did marry money; or rather, as the wedding has not yet taken place, and is, indeed, as yet hardly talked of, we should more properly say that he had engaged himself to marry money. And then, such a quantity of money! The Scatcherd wealth greatly exceeded the Dunstable wealth…

Debt, fortune lecture, hidden blood, and Scatcherd ruin resolve into duty-marriage that is also love — inheritance arithmetic as plot — so plot scores 87.

The doctor got on his cob and went his way, returning duly to Greshamsbury. But, in truth, as he went he hardly knew whither he was going, or what he was doing. Sir Roger had hinted that the cob would be compelled to make up for lost time by extra exertion on the road; but the cob had never been permitted to have his own way as to pace more satisfactorily than on the present occasion.

It was declared in the early pages of this work that Dr Thorne was to be our hero; but it would appear very much as though he had latterly been forgotten. Since that evening when he retired to rest without letting Mary share the grievous weight which was on his mind, we have neither seen nor heard aught of him. Its green pastures, its waving wheat, its deep and shady and--let us add--dirty lanes, its paths and stiles, its tawny-coloured, well-built rural churches…

Dirty lanes admitted beside beeches — genial country irony without pastoral glaze — so prose scores 88.

Before the reader is introduced to the modest country medical practitioner who is to be the chief personage of the following tale, it will be well that he should be made acquainted with some particulars as to the locality in which, and the neighbours among whom, our doctor followed his profession.

Landed Greshamsbury against Scatcherd railway money — county as cash geography — so world scores 89.

Before the reader is introduced to the modest country medical practitioner who is to be the chief personage of the following tale, it will be well that he should be made acquainted with some particulars as to the locality…

Place-first deferral of the hero bets on locality before romance named — so hook scores 86.

And thus after all did Frank perform his great duty; he did marry money… so that our hero may be looked on as having performed his duties in a manner deserving the fullest commendation.

Fortune lecture fulfilled by loving the suddenly rich illegitimate niece — duty and romance inverted together — so innov scores 85.

And thus after all did Frank perform his great duty; he did marry money; or rather, as the wedding has not yet taken place, and is, indeed, as yet hardly talked of, we should more properly say that he had engaged himself to marry money. And then, such a quantity of money!

Ironic duty kept and heart kept in one Scatcherd fortune — comic justice sealed — so ending scores 90.
